Little Pit Fishery

Barwell Lane, Hinckley, LE10 1SR, Leicestershire, United Kingdom

Little Pit Fishery is an established clay pit, about 80 years old, that is operated by Hinckley Angling Club on an annual membership basis. Membership is valid for 12 months from the date of purchase.

The lake is located behind a tree-lined barrier on the outskirts of Hinckley town, just beyond the Asda shop – and should not be mistaken with the bigger pit close to the Asda superstore – and has over twenty pegs, many of which are ideal for overnight fishing, including several double pegs. Others are characterized as being small enough to accommodate a single fisherman. All pegs are surrounded by natural-looking plants and willow trees, which provide cover and enhance to the charm of this lovely pool.

The lake has a deep section with a bottom that reaches around 20 feet before ascending to 13 feet towards the bay, with consistent characteristics that include silt, clay and gravel patches that are typical of a historic clay pit of this sort. The majority of swims vary in depth and are surrounded by lily pads where the water is clearly shallower and suitable for float fishing.

Due to Hinckley Angling Club's natural approach to fishery development, the pool is densely vegetated, with willow-woven banks, reed-lined spawning regions, and many shrubs and trees, including oak, ash, and sycamore. The lake has its own parking lot that is secured 24 hours a day to ensure fishermen are not disturbed during their fishing activities.

Little Pit is home to a healthy population of common and mirror carp weighing between 8 and 20 pounds, as well as roach, rudd, and perch. This means that the river is as appealing to serious carpers hoping to camp for a few days as it is to pleasure anglers looking for an hour or two of enjoyable float rod fishing. Additionally, there are some fine bronze bream that can sometimes be seen sunbathing on the surface, as well as some tench, the occasional crucian carp, and pike to almost twenty pounds that can frequently be seen laying in wait in each pool.

As predicted, the majority of methods catch fish, with the waggler and pole being ideal for fishing close in and the slider float or ledger being ideal for fishing deeper water. Almost all baits perform well when fished over groundbait or a bed of feeder pellets, with maggots, casters, hemp, sweetcorn, and hooker pellets all being popular. Anglers are able to use keepnets, which is unusual for many waterways these days, however carp should not be kept owing to their size. Little Pit's fishing season runs from June 16 to May 1.

Carp to over 20lb
