Clayton Wood Ponds

Clayton Wood Rise, West Park, LS16 6QN, United Kingdom

There are 2 ponds of roughly the same size (1/4 of an acre) that are situated dug into a hillside in the woods. The waters are very deep (up to 20ft) and always carry a lot of colour due to all the trees. The waters can, during hot spells suffer from a lack of oxygen, but generally they do fish well through the year. For some reason the bottom pond has got a lot of weed growth this year, which is limiting the places for fishing and tactics. There are some decent carp up to 20lb in both ponds that do fall quite often to floating baits. The other main species in there is tench, which are the classic dark green and are caught up to 8lb.

How do you again access to Clayton pounds. I believe it's free to fish up there even tried to ring Headingley Angling Shop, where you used to get tickets from, but a believe they have closed down.

I would like to know how much it is to fish this venue and also if there is any night fishing. Thanks

Up to 2 years ago (2019) it was free to fish Clayton ponds, because the current owners had not decided what to do with the site. This may have changed since. Be careful, and steer clear, of the Electricity Generators at the rear of the top pond. I'm told that there arew some good Tench in the top pond. (As previoiusly reported)

I found that the ponds are free fishing after the council found it had a protected species of newt in them. Me and my father have fished there and had some beautiful bream and small carp all around 6-7lb. I have seen a fisherman pulls a 17lb carp out there as well. I have also heard rumours of the odd wells catfish circulating around the top pond. There are also large pike in the ponds that I have caught on a small perch look a like lure. I really recommend these fishing ponds as they are hard fishing by the results will be worth it and for free, it’s a no brainier!
